How to use the Pomodoro timer

  1. Pick one task, then press Start and work until the timer ends.
  2. Take the short break. Stand up, drink water, look away from the screen.
  3. After four focus sessions (or the number you choose), take a long break.
  4. Use Pause if you are interrupted, and Reset to start the current session again.

About the technique

The Pomodoro Technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo. The classic pattern is 25 minutes of focus followed by a 5-minute break, with a longer break after four rounds. Many students prefer longer blocks, such as 50 minutes with a 10-minute break. Change the lengths until they suit you.

Tips

  • Keep this tab open. Some phones pause timers in background tabs, so the beep may be late if the screen is off. The time shown is always corrected when you come back.
  • Notifications appear only if you allow them. You can turn them off again in your browser's site settings.

Questions and answers

Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. The timer counts from the clock time, so it stays accurate. Your browser may delay the sound or notification while the tab is in the background.
Is any data saved?
No. Your settings are not stored, and nothing is uploaded. Reloading the page resets the timer to the defaults.
Why did I not hear the beep?
Check that your device is not muted. Browsers only allow sound after you have pressed a button on the page, which pressing Start does.
